Lumi
Dr. Lumi Aino Niskanen was never someone who completely fit in with her peers in the mundane world. From a young age in Helsinki, when they were out playing football or tag, she was usually to be found sequestered comfortably in a corner somewhere with a book and a voracious appetite for knowledge. Her social media presence was low, but her work ethic was strong and her hunger for more sharp. After graduation, she enrolled into the Theology and Religion department at Oxford, and moved to the UK to start a new life.
The new life ended up becoming far more than she had at first assumed as she caught the interest of one Ellen Kirkland, a physicist ten years her senior. Pushed and nudged in directions she never would have gone in herself, her life took a sharp turn when a revelation during a psychedelic trip led her into the Order of Hermes and House Criamon.
She's never stirred much notice, but her papers from that point on became broader, sharper, a deeper dive into the old shamanistic practices and their echoes in the modern world. She finished her doctorate, and recently landed a teaching position at King's College, moving to London just before Christmas of 2024.
- Ivory Tower: There's no denying that Lumi has had a bit of a cloistered existence. Never the most social of children, then heading straight to Oxford and a life in academics -- and the Order of Hermes, on top of that. She's not completely cut off from what the real world's like by any means, but her perception of 'normal' is certainly skewed, with more than a small dose of unconscious elitism.
- Culturephile: Her doctoral dissertation was an examination of the influence of Saami shamanistic practices in modern-day expressions of Finnish Christianity. City-dweller or nomadic, modern or prehistoric, her passion is humans, what they do, why they do it, and how their beliefs are shaped and in turn shape their world.
- Finn: Lumi was born in Helsinki and is of Saami descent. There was never any feeling for her of being out of place until she came to the UK, and she has never quite fully assimilated.
- House Criamon: Her relationship with time and reality both teeter on a thread, and she's gone through her share of Quiet already.
I'm here looking for chill people to tell stories of our monsters doing things together in fun ways. Lumi isn't an extraordinarily dark character, but that doesn't mean the things she faces shouldn't be. I just want to make sure we're all having a good time in the process.
