Legend has it that the six hundred square miles that comprise the greater London area once contained a half-dozen caerns. Even as recently as the signing of Magna Carta, there were still four within that territory, but by the turn of the 20th century that number had dwindled to only one. Since then a second has been founded, but both are embattled in their own way, and the prospect of seeing more caerns seems like a distant dream to nearly every tribe but the Glass Walkers.
The two caerns are, and will remain for the foreseeable future, led by NPCs who are not meant to become directly involved in storylines on a regular basis. By design, they fill their roles competently and conscientiously, and they set policy for the septs in a general sense, but they do not have a strong and obvious agenda beyond “push back the Wyrm and push forward the fight for Gaia.” Strong personalities and tightly-knit packs have a lot of influence on exactly how those goals get pursued — the city is such a huge place, and there are so many problems that need attention, that just drawing attention to things and being willing to take action are huge factors in determining sept policy.
This is intentional. Our goal is to keep the focus on the PCs; the NPC leaders are not likely to spend a lot of time leading PC on missions, assigning them specific goals, or engaging in interpersonal drama. They’re here to provide structure and continuity to the sphere without themselves dominating what PCs do and how they do it. At the end of the day, if PC packs spend a lot of time and effort driving fomori out of Waltham Wood, those efforts will have a much larger impact on the evolution of the septs and the storylines that follow than the NPC leaders will.
London Septs
- Sept of the Glass Towers – By far the younger of the two septs, this creation of the Glass Walkers dates only from the middle of the Second World War. Located around a caern to the City Mother of London within a former newspaper building on Fleet Street, the Glass Towers stands in the heart of one of the most densely populated places on Earth, waging a guerilla war against the overwhelming strength of the Weaver and the Wyrm.
- Sept of the Spiked Pavise – In the depths of Ruislip Wood at the western edge of London, the Fianna and their allies fiercely protect one of the strongest caerns still remaining in England. Dedicated to Hedgehog, the Spiked Pavise is a small piece of the wilderness at a time when wilderness is ever more difficult to find.
Other Nearby Septs
London’s two septs are not the only ones in the British Isles, of course. We have a separate page for details on other extant NPC septs that can potentially be used in character backgrounds or storylines.
Creating New Septs
We don’t like to say “impossible,” but it is very, very unlikely that any new septs will be founded in the greater London area during the lifespan of the game. It might happen a few years down the road, but if so, it would require truly titanic efforts on the part of the PCs, and it would come at a very high price.
